Nine of Swords

Image
Like many of the other sword cards, the nine of swords has a somewhat ominous appearance at first glance. Although, like the other swords cards if we take the time to explore the nuance of the card and symbols contained within, we find that it’s less ominous than thought. The card shows a person sitting up in their bed, with their head in their hands. They’re covered by a brightly covered quilt that has alternating squares with red poppies and the astrological glyphs on them. Behind them, or to their side, are nine swords suspended, but not pointed at them, rather facing the foot of the bed. The bed has a carving on it and it is an image of a sword fight where one person has surrendered and is sitting or kneeling. After taking in all of the meanings of the aforementioned symbols and their dynamics, we can begin to make some more sense of this image, instead of negatively reacting to it. After all, the tarot is meant to help us navigate our life, not be scared of it. Clearly, the p...

Eight of Swords

Image
Eight of swords is an interesting card... I feel like a lot of people interpret this card a variety of ways but ultimately, since it is a sword, it is traditionally seen in a more negative light. I don’t see it that way, and found that when looked at closely, it is interpretation has a lot to do with perception.  Here we have a blind folded woman in a dull scarlet colored gown who is bound by a cord or fabric, and stands on wet ground seemingly encircled by swords. The sky is gray and she seems to be far from civilization, with a mountain town in the distance behind her. When you first look at this card, it doesn’t have a pleasant feeling. It is foreboding and daunting at the very least... however, the closer you look you notice that the swords stuck in the ground aren’t necessarily caging her in, but are more or less to her left and right. The cord or fabric wrapped about her is not snug at all but is rather quite loose, and it wouldn’t take much effort for her to free herse...

Seven of Swords

Image
The seven of swords is a card that elicits a myriad of responses at first look. It’s a card that can carry many interpretations that are somewhat varied in regards to what the reader is intuitively drawn to. While none of the meanings particularly negative, the image does portray a sort of trickster type of vibe. So let’s take a look and get to know this card a bit deeper. Here we see a young man tip toeing away from what looks like traveler tents, could possibly be carnival or military tents, carrying 5 swords while two are stuck in the ground behind him. The terrain he is walking on is fairly smooth versus the terrain behind him with is varied in color and texture. Most noticeably he has a smirk on his face and a red fez hat on. The question is, is he getting away with something bad or good? The fez indicates spiritual awareness and there is a very good probability that he is taking weapons from those who should not have them. Perhaps he is preventing an attack or alternately he...

Six of Swords

Image
The six of swords is a card that I consider to be like a sigh of relief... there is an awful lot going on in the picture so let’s take a look at it. There are three people in a boat, an adult and child are sitting down while a third person steers and paddles the boat. Both people sitting down are wrapped in cloaks and huddled together. In the front of the boat are six swords, standing straight up, appearing to have the blade stuck in the hull, and they are forming a sort of protective wall in front of the passengers. Outside of the boat, we see two main things; the water in the foreground or behind the boat is choppy amd rough, while the water in front of the boat or in the background is smooth as smooth can be. The sky is mostly clear and there is no sun or moon to be seen. Land is not too far away and it appears that is where the boat is headed. One of the more prominent messages of this card is moving from trouble or conflict to peace and resolution as indicated by the differen...

Five of Swords

Image
The five of swords is a card that has a very interesting scene on display... the sky in this card is noticeably chaotic with grey clouds in very weird shapes that seem to obscure any source of light. There are three guys in the card.... one is far in the background, burying his face in his hands, another is midground staring far out in the distance, and the third guy is in the foreground with a smarmy smile on his face, looking away from the other two guys. He is holding three swords, two pointing upwards and one pointing down, with two additional swords on the ground by his feet, pointing in opposite directions. It seems he has defeated two opponents and walked off the winner. The question is what has he won?  The five of swords is a card that suggests while victory may be yours, it isn’t a victory that has gained you anything and there’s a chance your victory wasn’t virtuous. The turmoil present in the scene is what overwhelmingly draws my attention when I look at the card....
