Seven of Wands

Seven of wands is a card that I find has a lot of different interpretations depending on who is doing the reading and how they learned the tarot. In an intuitive reading this card can often cover the gamut, but traditional meanings are a little varied in approach but basically similar. There is a lot going on in with the symbolism in this card and it can be helpful to break that down first…

Looking at this image, the first thing felt is distress, that some sort of fight or quarrel is happening. The expression on this mans face is one of anguish and/or distress. He is defending his position on top of the hill against what seems to be others, who are also wielding staffs, coming after him. If you look closely, you see he has two entirely different shoes on and a tunic, neither of which are indicative of battle ready clothing. Also, something really important that I always notice is while we see other staffs that are seemingly attacking him, the do not seem to be wielded by other people… the sky is blue and there is no sign of real threat. We only assume there’s a threat by his facial expression and defensive position.

Often, when this card is pulled it is a sign that you need to stand your ground. There is a good chance the battle you’re fighting is internal and rather than facing external issues, you’re truly just facing your inner critic and all the thoughts that tell you it’s not okay to be you. That being said, wands are about passion and action so the deeper meaning is more about fighting for what you want and not backing down in the face of adversity. Youve made it to the top of the hill and while it’s what you’ve worked so hard for, you’re going to have to put in some extra effort to stay up there. Take care to notice your inner dialogue as you find yourself at the goal you’ve been working so hard for and know that you are best served by being yourself, and moving beyond self doubt.

Sometimes the hardest people to fight are ourselves, but with passion and continued persistence, all will be well and even better than you imagined.
