Two of Cups

The two of cups is probably a favorite card for many love birds! Taking our first look at this card, it’s energy of union, partnership, and love is undeniable. That being said, there are some alternative meanings and messages available with this card…

Upon first glance, we see a young couple staring longingly at one another and offering an exchange of goblets. The young woman has a laurel wreath crowning her head and the young man has a wreath of roses crowning his head. It’s as if they’ve both been awarded a victory over, or for, something, but different things. The laurel wreath is a symbol of victory, while a rose wreath is more a symbol of love or passion. Perhaps her victory is winning his affection and his victory is the passion she has bestowed upon him that has brought meaning to his life. The young woman is dressed in blue and white representing intuition and the connection to spirit. The young man is dressed in a yellow tunic representing the physical and material world. Above them is a caduceus situated beneath a lions head with angel wings. This very clearly represents a union, as the caduceus is more about unifying opposites than what most believe it to be about. The lion is a fiercely loyal and protective creature, but with the wings attached to it, we can presume it is a divinely protected union that is meant to last.

All in all this card mostly has to do with romantic love, whether it’s new love, deepening of love, new level of love in a relationship, divine union, or what have you. On occasion, it can mean an internal union of opposites, not unlike the lovers card in the major arcana. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve pulled the two of cups or the lovers card and knew it was not about an external union but rather an internal one! The caduceus supports that idea as it is also about unification of opposites into a material whole or spiritual communion.

So when you pull this card it can be best approached and understood by listening to your intuition and spirit to understand the underlying meanings, as well as the cards surrounding it. As most gifted readers will tell you, the cards tell a story that can be different from person to person, and only listening to spirit and discerning the symbols of each individual card, as a whole will help clarify cards such as the two of cups.
