Queen of Swords

The first of the female court cards, the queen of swords has so much to offer us. This card is rich and deep showing the power of someone who has worked to be the mistress of their mind. Sitting high on her throne, this queen has a lot to teach us.

We see a regal woman sitting high on a ornamental throne, decorated in cloud covered robes, wearing a crown, and wielding a sword that is pointing high into the clear blue sky. While the clear blue sky is above her, a single bird soaring in it, below it is filled with fluffy grey clouds. Her throne is covered with butterflies, and the head and wings of a cherub. Her crown also is decorated with gold butterflies. Her right hand holds the sword straight up into the sky while her left hand is open as if to receive, her wrist decorated with prayer beads. It also seems as if there are crescent moons adorning her throne... so many symbols are contained in this picture, it is almost hard to focus on one.

The queen of swords, like all sword court cards, is about mental clarity and clear communication. She is in control of her mind, her thoughts, and she can communicate them with ease. Its not a mistake that the clouds disappear in the top half of the card, as it shows her mental clarity. The sword pointing up to it is her ability to focus, her clear mind soaring like a single bird, having mastered the ability to rise above unimportant mental chatter. Her right hand holds the sword to the sky, not unlike the ace of swords, communicating messages through her intellect and skill while her left hand is held out, receiving intuitive messages for her to communicate. She is fierce and exacting with her thoughts and words but she is also caring and intuitive having learned the importance of listening to divine guidance. The butterflies and cherub are more heavenly messengers that suggest she has the power to transform with her ability to clearly articulate thoughts with compassion.

Often when this card is pulled in a reading, it’s a sign there is writing to be done. She is the one who brings the divine messages through her cleared out mind, filters them with her intellect, and mixes them with her mastery of communication. Whether your wanting to write a book or you just need to journal some thoughts to have a clearer head, it is ideal to honor the message she brings you. There is nothing subtle about the queen and she’s telling you to step into the untapped power of your intellect, if you haven’t already, and if you have then it’s time to develop it further. If you feel you have a long way to a clear mind, take her prayer beads as a sign that it’s time to meditate and become the master of your mind and in time you will express your self with the grace and ease of a queen.
