Knight of Wands

Image
It’s a stud on a stud! The knight of wands is definitely a charismatic adventurer eager to draw attention to himself and make sure you cannot miss his entrance. But is that all he is or does he represent more? There is a lot going on in this card that helps us understand who this knight is and what he desires and what his purpose or focus is. First we have the pyramids of Giza in the background, just like in the page of wands card. That feels to me like it’s indicative of perhaps the page in another stage of his journey, like he has that confidence now that he was missing before and now that he has even more confidence his enthusiasm and charisma is through the roof. The sky is blue and clear indicating a general positive setting for his journey. His horse is russet colored and rearing up on his hind legs as if he is ready to mount a mare, ready for a confrontation, or over stimulated about something. There are two places in this card where we see green leaves, on the reins and on the ...

Page of Wands

Image
The page of wands is the first of the wands court cards, like all pages are. Also, he has some similarities to the other page cards, but he definitely has qualities of his own that aren’t replicated anywhere else in the tarot. We see a young man, standing in the desert, dressed in a somewhat elaborate tunic that’s is decorated with salamanders. On his head of bright red hair, he wears a heat with a small red feather that shoots straight up tot he sky like a flame. He has a wand in his hands and he seems to be quite intrigued by it, as he stares up at it with a look of wonder on his face. Behind him are the pyramids of Giza, a place on this planet of great power and transformative energy. The sky is blue and clear and he seems as if he is about to start upon a journey, ready to move into what’s ahead of him, with an open mind and a grateful heart. Several of the symbols are indicative of the fire element and the energy of the fire signs and/or element of fire is one of passion and ...

10 of Wands

Image
The ten of wands card has always been a bit of an obvious one, for me, in regards to understanding the symbolism of the picture. That being said, it means a variety of things depending on what the focus of the reading is and the other cards pulled alongside it. The ten of wands portrays a man carrying a large bundle of wands, probably too large for one person to carry. The way he is walking, face buried in the sticks, leaning forward with feet spaced widely apart, it is clear he’s focused on the task at hand. In the background, we see a few buildings and some full trees, placed in front of a bright blue sky. Does he even know that he is missing the view of such a gorgeous scenery? Is he aware that he could have someone assisting him in carrying the wands? Wouldn’t it make it so much easier and possibly quicker to get some help? What were really seeing here is a man who has become a workaholic. He has become so focused on his work that he doesn’t realize he could use some help. Ask...

Nine of Wands

Image
Nine of wands is one of those cards that seems kind of askew for some reason. This card is so rich in symbolism, some of it being obvious and others not so much.  We see a man standing in front of a sort of makeshift fence, that while the poles have been placed unevenly, there is still more work to finish it. He stands with what seems to be the final pole and stares over his shoulder at the fence. The expression on his face is unsure, or frustrated, or just disapproving. Either way he seems to be thinking about something that isn’t pleasing him. Additionally, his head is bandaged, which from first glance we know he has some sort of injury to his head. The sky is bright blue and the background seems to be fertile, whether those are mountains or forests I am never sure but it is obvious, the fertile meaning of the color green.  Going back to the bandage, we know the physical expression is that he has injured his head, but if we look at it from a symbolic perspective and at...

Eight of Wands

Image
There are very few cards in the Rider Waite that do not include people or animals or some kind of scene from which to extract information. The eight of wands is one of those cards. As a result, it can take a bit of time and focus to truly discern what it is your looking at and what the meaning behind it is. Upon first glance, we see what looks like 8 sticks, in the foreground of the picture. The wands are straight and all pointing in the same direction with new leaves budding near the ends. The background is quite serene and includes blue skies, fertile terrain including a river and in the very distant background a building of some sort, perhaps a home or villa. At first this can be a bit puzzling and feel like a riddle…. What the hell do 8 wands have to tell me?  We can at least discern this; the wands are all pointing in the same direction, and they are all quite healthy looking with new growth. This feels to me that they are pointing in a direction as an arrow would, and s...
