The patriarch of the wands cards, the king of wands, has an especially strong energy about him. While the queen is just as strong and passionate, the king represents these qualities in a different way.

Here we see a king sitting on his throne which is raised on a platform, suggesting that while he is of this world, he is above all the minor inconveniences and mundane actions of the world. His bright red clothing and hood represent his passionate nature, as do the golden flames that make up the high points of his crown. His legs are slightly parted, nowhere near as much as the queens are, showing while he embraces his passion and sexuality, he also has complete control of those energies. He has learned to channel his passionate energy into action. We also see a salamander near, standing on the platform and looking to the west, the same direction as the king. Notably, the queen of wands and the other court cards had the pyramids of Giza situated in the west. I have always felt that his gaze directed towards the pyramids without the pyramids visible indicates that he is journeyed through the mysteries and is no longer hyper focused on them but rather he has integrated their teachings. Additionally, there is a salamander on his throne, and the salamander is biting its tail. This, like the ouroboros indicates a completed cycle of life, death, and rebirth. I see this as another indicator of the kings journey through all phases of creation and the return to presence, where his passions feed his intended actions.
When you receive the king of wands in a reading, it can show a person embodying these qualities coming into your life, or that you are embodying these qualities. It can be a warning that it is necessary for you to learn how to embody them kings qualities of control and empowered action through passion, rather that letting your passion take over your life. The king can warn you to not let your passion overwhelm you and that you can find grounded ness in your passion once you rise above your base carnal desires and use those energies of creation to get what you want. At the same time, it’s pertinent to remember the journey to this place of elevated awareness is not without its pitfalls, especially when fiery passion is involved. Can you stand witness to your desires and passions without letting them consume you? And if they do consume you, what lessons will you take from them before you are reborn anew?
