Four of Cups

The four of cups is a card that often causes a double take. Much of the card looks like a mundane event, but something about it is very out of place. Let’s take a look…

We see a young person sitting cross legged underneath a tree, their arms also crossed. This is a signed of being closed off or inhibiting ones energy from being open to what’s present. This person is dressed in basic clothing, signifying they may not hold a high rank or be particularly wealthy. The tree is supporting them and offering shade, as trees do, but we often take this aspect of nature for granted. Nature supports us in many ways, and many of those ways we don’t even think of because we’re often too busy in our own world to even recognize the myriads of way the natural world supports our best life. Which brings us the the focus of the card… there are three cups placed in a line in front of this person and they are so used on them, it’s like nothing could deter their gaze from what they’re focused on. But is that a good thing? This person is so focused on these three cups that they do not even see the fourth cup materializing out of thin air, held by a hand coming out of a cloud. This is definitely not something you see everyday! It is a gift from the ether, or spirit, and it is being presented to them freely. But alas, their so focused on the three cups in front of them, their energy isn’t open to receiving anything else, even a gift from spirit.

This card is a big HELLO telling us to stop being so hard focused on what’s in front of us that we’re too busy to see what is being presented to us! It could be the missing piece of what seems to be a puzzle this person is trying to figure out. It could be the energy needed to make sense of what’s in front of them, if only they would trust in the support of the world around them. When we are so busy narrowly staring at what’s right in front of us, trying to figure out how to make it work, that we cannot see the answer to our problem is being offered, to us, we are in a detriment. It could be a relationship, or a creative project, or an emotion that we just can’t seem to see our way around… regardless of what it is, this card is reminding us to open our eyes to the possibility of what is, and to the gifts spirit showers upon us every day. If we’re too busy stuck in our heads, we will never recognize a solution when it is presented in a new or different way.

It’s time to just step away from the issue that has you stuck and allow for inspiration to flow! Get out of your head and ground into the earth, letting the gifts of spirit present in nature open your eyes to what’s possible. Trust that your problem has a solution, even if you can’t see it yet.
