Major Arcana 0: The Fool

 The first card of the major arcana, The Fool, ironically starts with the number 0. There is however an excellent reason for this..


The fool doesn’t quite represent the beginning of the journey, but rather the space between the end of one journey and the beginning of the next. To be the fool requires a lot of optimism and trust that the universe loves you and will guide and protect you no matter what is happening. In the card, we see a young person walking towards the edge of a cliff, dressed in fancy clothing, signifying wealth or status, carrying a small sack at the end of a stick. It looks as though they might walk right off the edge of the cliff as they aren’t even looking in the direction they are walking. How foolish?! To trust that everything will work out, and you will learn so much on the journey. There is also a little white dog walking closely to the person, and it is clear this pup will look out for its friend, whether the cliff face is 2inches or 10feet. The sky is a bright yellow with a big glowing sun shining in it, symbolizing vibrancy and optimism, and the icy mountains in the back represent obstacles to be crossed during the journey. 

The fool represents that energy necessary to start an adventure! So often we are stuck in a rut and mindlessly doing the motions of life, but we’re know something better is out there. But what if we fail? But what if you succeed? But what if you get hurt? But what if you heal? The fool doesn’t even necessarily weigh out it’s options or force a direction, rather they trust their intuition, rely on their ability to be optimistic, and make the choice to start the journey to their dream life. 

Receiving the fool card in a reading is a sure sign of a new journey coming! It is a sign that you have finished a cycle and are in a sort of liminal space waiting for the universe to shine its light on the path your heart desires. It would be wise to let go of attachments that are cumbersome and rely on your inner voice as you start out on that path that absolutely nobody but you can create for you!

16: The Tower

The Tower card right after the Devil card always feels a little overwhelming! There is a good reason the Tower follows the Devil and why it, like the Devil is not at all as scary as it first seems to be…   On the card we see a giant tower being struck by a bolt of lightning which blows the giant crown shaped roof off of the tower and sets it ablaze. We see fire coming out from the top and the windows and a man and a woman falling out of the windows. They both have blue and red items of clothing on symbolizing material desires and intuitive connection. Their faces are filled with fear and surprise which makes sense considering the circumstance. One may ask why didn’t they just attempt to leave the tower if they had an idea a storm was coming, instead of possibly falling to their death as a result of an inevitable strike of lightning causing them to leap? 14: Temperance

 Major Arcana 14 is Temperance. Such a truly perfect card to come after the death card! An angel blessing us with impartial waters of life, or something else? Let’s go! There is an awful lot going on in this card but the first thing that catches our eye is this seemingly divine figure pouring water between two golden cups. Dressed in a white gown with beautiful red wings, we see a theme that repeats itself over and over in this card. White being heavenly/holy/pure and red being material/carnal/passion, we recognize this being as a balance between spiritual and material aspects of reality/existence. With one foot in the water and one on land we see the same theme, material and spiritual repeated, and we can assume from this theme the two cups passing water back and forth also have to do with the importance of existing in the material and spiritual realms.
